28 September 2024 @ 11:00 am - 4:00 pm

How to stay sane while making content that sells in a global industry

Despite all kinds of confusion, there is nothing more important than a strong script. Cati Weinek will present the producer’s toolkit: building your slate of projects, understanding what financiers and platforms are looking for, creating a budget and finance plan, and knowing what draws audiences to the screen — all while you continue to write beautiful scripts that nourish both your soul and your country’s.

Meet Your Facilitator: Cati Weinek

Cati is an active member of the South African film and content creation community, where she is focused on delivering beautifully crafted films and series.

Drawing on skills developed over years, Cati has the unique ability of working across the pipeline as a development executive, champion of talent and innovative storytelling, executive producer and as a line producer. She starts at the inception of creativity, working with care to support rare talent right through to delivery of the visual medium to the target audience. Her commitment to satisfying and surprising target audiences helps her retro-engineer how to create inspiring yet budget-savvy content. Her business acumen embraces both the operational and strategic in the production pipeline.

She takes pride in being hands-on to ensure the creative vision is realised with authenticity and excellence.  She is people-centred in her work, while delivering commercially and creatively successful content that is always brave. Her multi-faceted skills and experience support the work of the best in African crew and cast, and making content that is culturally unique, but globally resonant.  Celebrating and protecting cultural diversity is a skill honed working in a young democracy and a vibrant industry – but a skill with global resonance.

Cati Weinek’s content is multi-award winning, selected for markets at Series Mania and Cannes as well as global festivals. She is an alumnus of the Erich Pommer Institute, founder of a South African gender-diverse collective of filmmakers; co-creator of the ground-breaking script programme, Sediba, in South Africa. She has produced 10 feature films and has created more than 600 hours of television content with Kings of Joburg Series 2 on Netflix her latest production.  Her animation feature film, Headspace, released theatrically in Spain, Poland, Latvia, New Zealand, Australia and South Africa in the last half of 2023.
