PLAYWRITING WITH ISMAIL MAHOMED

ISMAIL MAHOMED is the Director for the Centre for Creative Arts at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. With more than 35-years of experience in cultural leadership he is a multi-award winning arts administrator, thought-leader in the art sector and a published playwright. His previous occupations include serving as the CEO of the Market Theatre Foundation, Artistic Director of National Arts Festival and Senior Cultural Specialist for the US Embassy. He serves on the Boards of Directors of the KKNK Festival, Aardklop Festival, STAND Foundation, ASSITEJ SA, Campaign For Free Expression amongst several other organisations. He was one of three persons from the African continent selected to participate in the Cultural Leadership for the 21st Century programme at Kings College (London).

The speaker will discuss the factors that playwrights need to note about the current arts funding scenario and how to navigate the landscape in order to take plays from the page to the stage.
