14-Beat Narrative Arc Structure

PIPPA DYER of IQU2Film.co.za will unpack her 14-Beat Narrative Arc Structure on 27 July 2024, online with WGSA, from 10 AM to 12 noon. Dyer’s 14-Beat Structure is a table of 14 progressive Narrative Beats, compiled by herself, that essentially combines the beats of the main narrative arc structures proposed by Robert McKee’s “Story,” Christopher Vogler’s “Hero’s Journey,” and the ETB structure (Emotional Theme Bundling) that she learned while ad hoc lecturing at AFDA Film College from 2012 to 2018. This 14-Beat structure was originally created for first-year students, but even her established writers have found it a useful tool to plot their narrative arcs. The Storyteller 14-Beat Narrative Arc Structure forms Volume 1, the first of a 4-part Screenwriting Series published in 2013, called “The Storyteller.

Meet your Speaker:

Pippa Dyer brings over 40 years of experience in storytelling and performance. Born in the turbulent era of Apartheid, she was catapulted into political consciousness, writing gritty township lyrics. Her diverse skills span film, documentary, and politico development organizations.

Pippa has held various roles in the industry, from actor and production assistant to wardrobe head and marketing director. She has also been involved in performance and writing projects, such as “The Voice Beyond the Veil” and the NFVF Sediba Spark program. As an author, she published Strike Up! Structure Your First Film in 2013.

Her teaching experience includes lecturing at AFDA and Boston Media House and leading film writing courses for offenders. Currently, she is the CEO of the AWEH RT Centre, where she teaches creative skills to vulnerable populations.
